Blurb reads:
Written for the general reader as well as for the student, this comprehensive and ecumenically objective history tells how the Evangelical revival starting in the 1730s brought a new power to personal religion for many of the English, including the Methodists. This was followed by a Catholic revival both in the Church of England and in the enlarged Roman Catholic community, together with a new determination to respond to the needs of the world's first industrial nation.
Such revival made Victorian England as religious as it was, with a faith which inspired poets from Wordworth to Hopkins and many heroes and heroines of philanthropy. The religion spread (like the connected British empire and commerce) into all the continents. For all its faults it was an age full of courage and creativity, one of the peaks of Christian civilization.
That age was brought to an end by the first world war. Confidence was one of the casualties in the trenches, which partly revealed and partly caused the advance of a secular spirit. But this history does justice to all - to the much maligned Nonconformists, for example - brings together themes and personalities of interest to all who seek to understand what made England
