The Englishman's Castle by John Gloag, illustrated by Marjory Whittington, 1949, Second Revised Edition, published by Eyre and Spottiswoode, London. Hardback, 176 pages

'A history of houses, large and small, in town and country, from AD 100 to the present day'

This vintage history hardback is beautifully illustrated throughout with black and white drawings and photos.
It is in good condition - there is a plastic sleeve protecting the original dust-jacket, which has some small tears and creases along the top edges, including a small part missing on the top of the spine and the back. The front flap has been clipped at the bottom corner.
Inside there is no writing, tearing, creasing or dog-earing.

22cm x 14.5cm x 2cm approx.

Blurb reads:
Here is history that comes alive for the reader: it is the history of your fireside, of your armchair, your dining room, your bedroom, of the house itself, large or small, in town or country. From the Roman villa-house to the home of today, this history shows how comfort and privacy have evolved; how the idea that an Englishman's House is his Castle has developed, and how it has influenced national ideas of home-making; how methods of cooking, heating and lighting have changed and improved, age by age; how house-building has passed through periods of fortification, magnificence, elegance, stern utility, convenience and inconvenience.
Mr Gloag as a novelist writes history with a special vividness; and the book quickly ran through two impressions when first published in 1944. This new cheaper edition, designed to reach an even wider public, has substituted photographic plates for the original colour plates by Mrs Whittington but retains her delightful line and wash drawings.
