Blurb reads:
The life and look of America have been mirrored in its art ever since America was first discoverd. Now, in this one volume, some 300 representative samples of America's best art reflect the changing American scene through the years, and a lively narrative relates the artists' lives and the social history of their times.
Every "school", classification, and style of American painting is represented and defined, including Hudson River, luminist, primitive, realist, Ash Can, impressionist, trompe l'oeil, cubist, futurist, abstract impressionist, minimal. The sculpture ranges in style and period from the chaste nudity of Hiram Powers' Greek Slave to the "primary structures" of Tony Smith and Donald Judd. Prints vary from early aquatints to Andy Warhol's Marilyn Monroe Diptych.
Brief biographies and many anecdotes provide memorable vignettes of the artists and their contemporaries...
