Blurb reads:
Antarctica with its surrounding ocean and islands has fascinated explorers and scientists since the days of Captain Cook. But only very recently has any concerted attempt been made at a sustained and co-ordinated scientific exploration of the region. Today the scientists of twelve nations are investigating the vast Antarctic Ice-sheet and its underlying rock, the flora and fauna, the atmosphere above and the ice-covered Southern Ocean, rich in the plankton which supports myriads of sea birds as well as penguins, seals and whales. International co-operation on this scale has never before been achieved in the history of mankind. It has been made possible by a multilateral treaty which effectively reserves the Antarctic regions for peaceful scientific investigation by all interested nations.
Drawing on the unrivalled resources of the Scott Polar Research Institute, Mr King, the Librarian and Information Officer, has written a book which aims to provide the general reader with the background information essential to a fuller understanding of this unprecedented scientific effort and to the incomparably fascinating region on which it is focused.
The book is lavishly illustrated with over 60 photographs in colour and 250 in black-and-white, as well as numerous maps, tables and figures.
