The tremendous expansion in the nuclear reactor program has created a great demand for trained personnel, not only within the national atomic energy project but also in military, industrial, research and academic organisations. This book, based upon the course on Nuclear Reactor Theory given at the Oak Ridge School of Reactor Technology, was prepared as a text for use in various training programs and in courses offered by universities and colleges to meet his demand.
This book has been written for engineers and scientists who plan to enter the field of nuclea reactor science and engineering. For those unfamiliar with the basic nuclear physics, four introductory chapters are included to provide an understanding of the physical processes occurring in a nuclear chain reactor. The main body of the book is devoted to the fundamental principles involved in the calculation of the critical conditions for thermal-neutron chain reacting systems. Throughout the book, the mathematical derivations are carried out in considerable details.
To dat ethere has not been available in a single publication an organised and fully developed treatment of both homogeneous and heterogeneous reactors. It is the purpose of this book to fill the gap in the literature of nuclear science. Although the discussion is based mainly on elementary diffusion theory and the continuous slowing down of fast neutrons, two important chapters explain the more rigorous transport theory and the use of slowing-down kernels.
