Foreword begins:
This tale is the true romance of the sea, for it covers over forty years of ocean hazard, of storm and stress and triumphant achievement, revealing that spirit of daring which inspired our early merchant adventurers to sail uncharted oceans, and is still alive undaunted to carry the Shipping Industry through the deepest depression it has ever known.
It is the story of a great and undistinguished seaman, who began his unique career as a humble ship's boy in one of the old wind-jammers, and was destined at his death to hold the proud position of Commodore of the world's largest Shipping Company.
The following chapters had been completed by Sir Edger Britten only a short time before his sudden, brief illness at the end of October 1936, wshen he was carried ashore from his beloved Queen Mary to die in a nursing home in Southampton. On the last day of that same month his body was taken out to sea from the Queen Mary's usual berth, and committed to the deep off the Isle of Wight in those waters through which he had so many times brought the Berengaria and Queen Mary.
It seemed to the Publishers that, apart from the revision of certain slight errors which crept into the text, the narrative should be here presented exactly as the gallant Commodore wrote it.
