Blurb reads:
"So with a badge in our button holes, an emblem - or its photographic counterpart - on our walls and, best of all, a clear contribution card in our pockets, we certainly are now in a position to fulfil the requirements of the most exciting, up-to-date trade union protagonist." So wrote one trade-union leader 50 years ago. Today trade unionists still carry their cards and wear their badges, but what of the emblems? Once they adorned the walls of union members in their thousands. Today they exist mainly in private collections, treasured not only for their historical associations, but also for their design, colour and the lithographic techniques that made their mass reproduction possible. They represent the self-respect and self-confidence of the growing union movement, and as working-class sponsored art they form an important aspect of the history of art and design. In this book Mr Leeson traces the origins of these emblems, their connection with the old craft guilds and the changes brought about as the trade union movement developed, and describes the men involved in their conception and design. The story is told in a compact and informative text and with 32 full-page reproductions, four in colour.
