'A Field Survey of the Western Frontier-Works of Mercia in the Seventh and Eighth Centuries AD'

This large vintage hardback is illustrated throughout with black and white photos and diagrams.

- there is foxing at the start and end and on the edges of the pages - there is a written inscription on the front flysheet
Otherwise there is no tearing, creasing or dog-earing.

28.5cm x 22cm x 3.5cm approx.

Blurb reads:
This survey deals with King Offa's Dyke (c784-96) which extends, as Bishop Asser noted in King Alfred's time, 'from sea to sea' - Dee to lower Severn; with Wat's Dyke, a less extensive, earlier bank and ditch from Dee to middle Severn; and with the 'Short Dykes', built at critical points along the mountainous centre of the fluctuating Dark Age boundary between Celt and Saxon. Published in parts in Archaeolgia Cambrensis between 1925 and 1931, it has long been known to scholars and students of the dramatic interaction of Celtic and Anglian interests in the border-land in the seventh and eighth centuries, and has provided a standard technique for the study in the field of works of its class elsewhere in Britain. As now produced in one volume under the auspices of the British Academy, with a new introduction by the author, the Rhys Lecture for 1940, and an additional series of coloured maps, it should reach a much wider public.
