Blurb reads:
What clothes did the early Christians wear? What did they eat? What did they talk about over the dinner table? What recreations did they enjoy?
These and many similar questions are answered in this study, in which the methods of the social historian are applied to the first five centuries of the Church's history. In a series of six graphic scenes the author describes the daily life of the first believers, personifying the general facts and depicting them in the composite portraits of specific individuals. Six characters (Clement of Alexandria, a virgin martyr, a workman in the catacombs, Paul of Samosata, John Chryosostom and John Cassian) are taken as representatives of the early Christians. By conducting the reader through the daily life, hour by hour, the attempt is made to re-create the past as a living reality.'
