Blurb reads:
"Fielding's Folly" was the name locally given to "Retreat", the lovely neglected property in Virginia where the Fieldings still continued the Southern tradition of living, in spite of poverty, debt and local disapproval. The disapproval centred mainly on Francis Fielding, and when Eunice Gale announced her intention of marrying him on a very short acquaintance, prophecies of disaster met her on every side.
This book is the story of the marriage between Eunice and Francis, two people who loved each other, but whose ways and standards clashed. Eunice was Puritan by temperament as well as tradition: Francis took his pleasures where he could. Even on their Pacific honeymoon there were snakes in their Paradise, and when they returned to take up life together at "Retreat", their differences gradually forced them apart...
Mrs Parkinson Keyes has won her place among novelists by her ability to tell a story "to create a little world and to interest you faithfully and well in its people", as a critic once said of her novels. The action of this book changes from Hawaii and Singapore to Virginia and New England, and the contrasted life of all these places makes up a richly varied background to a moving story of real human beings and their problems.
