Blurb reads:
The English Midlands in general are as little, or just as much, "sodden and unkind", to quote Hilaire Belloc's strictures, as his own Sussex by the Sea is clammy with Channel fogs. The Midland countryside is rich in landscape, architecture and unexploited charm. CV Hancock is a collector of such Midland riches. Going always on foot, he has sought them here and there, on both sides of Severn, over a region extending from the Cotswolds to Dovedale and from the Warwickshire-Leicestershire border to the Borderland of Wales.
This is a book of byways, not of main roads; of villages, not of towns; of the lesser - and less advertised - precious stones, not of celebrated jewels such as Compton Wynates and Stokesay Castle. It passes Dovedale by, in order to visit Beresford Dale.
Though the choice of riches is eclectic, it is not narrow. There is much about old churches, of course, for the village church often is, apart from all else, the local storehouse of beauty and historic interest, the epitome of the life of the place for centuries. But the author's interest is as readily stirred by a deserted canal or a branch railway line whose last train has gone.
